The Yamada clan was of thoroughly moderate prosperity, holding unremarkable jobs and not having any particularly interesting events affecting their lives. Being raised in such a situation, Hanatarou grew up with no particular direction in life. One day, his father suggested that he join the Shinigami academy, and, not having anything better to do, he did. Hanatarou generally performed poorly in the Academy, getting unremarkable scores in Kidou and being bottom of his class in swordsmanship. The only area where he showed any particular talent was the healing arts, which eventually earned him a place in the 4th division, which specializes in healing and other non-combat support duties. Hanatarou privately hoped that, now that he was in the Gotei 13, people would start to take notice of him. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Despite remarkable performance and climbing the ranks quickly, nobody took any note of Hanatarou, quickly forgetting his name and face after meeting him. By the time he reached 7th seat, he had come to accept this. This all changed when Hanatarou was assigned to janitorial duty in the prison where Kuchiki Rukia was being held shortly after being brought back to Soul Society. Although Rukia was a noble, she treated Hanatarou kindly, and he fell into the habit of talking to her every day during his duties. During this time, she told him about a man named Kurosaki Ichigo, who she met in the real world. Not long after these conversations, Rukia was moved to a remote tower, and Hanatarou lost all contact with her. One day, Hanatarou had gotten separated from his squad, and accidentally barreled into a pack of 11th division members, causing a small-scale brawl/riot. In the middle of this, as Hanatarou tried to escape, he was abducted by Ichigo and Ganju, who tried to use him as a hostage. This didn't work - the 11th division, being combat-oriented, hates the 4th division. Ichigo and Ganju escaped, accidentally dragging Hanatarou along with them. After introducing himself to his assailants and hearing their story, Hanataro explained to Ichigo that he knew an alternate path into the inner circle of the Seireitei, throught he sewers. When asked why he was helping them, he explained that he, too, wishes for Rukia's life to be saved. As soon as the trio escaped the sewers, Ichigo was attacked by the 6th division lieutenant, Abarai Renji. Ichigo defeated Renji, but was direly injured in the battle. They retreated to the sewers again, where Hanatarou used his healing skills to revive the unconscious Ichigo. Shortly after his recovery, the three of them set off towards Rukia's cell again. This time, Zaraki Kenpachi stood in their way. Hanatarou, aware of Kenpachi's power and the meaning of the "Kenpachi" title, begged Ichigo to run rather than fighting him, but Ichigo stayed to fight while Ganju took Hanatarou and ran. Eventually, unaware of what became of Ichigo, Ganju and Hanatarou reached the entrance to Rukia's cell. Using a key that he stole, Hanatarou opened the door, finding Rukia within, but Ganju refused to accept her, claiming that she killed his brother. While he was trying to convince Ganju not to kill Rukia, Kuchiki Byakuya, captain of 6th Division, drew near. Since Ganju refused to fight to protect someone who he hated, Hanatarou headed back out to face the captain alone, knowing he was walking towards certain death. Fortunately, Ganju had a change of heart, throwing him back at Rukia and fighting Byakuya himself - and losing spectacularly. Hanataro soon lost consciousness due to the strength of Byakuya's spiritual pressure. After this battle, Hanatarou remained in 4th division, healing the various people who were brought in during the course of the Ryoka's invasion of Soul Society. He knows little of what happened involving Aizen's betrayal, except that it happened. Some time before the Bount clan invaded Soul Society, Hanatarou was sent as part of a team to the human world, where he got a job as a retail clerk. During this time, he was pulled into Memento Eden. Personality: Hanatarou could best be described as pitiful. He is weak-spirited and gullible, letting others push him around with little complaint. He's not very good at much, a fact he is well aware of, but he is still driven by the urge to help people he cares about in whatever way he can. This drive can lead to momentary spurts of great courage, doing thigns like fighting an opponent hundreds of times stronger than himself. Hanatarou is a geniunely kind and caring soul, almost overly so. It is difficult for him to find the bad in anyone, which can leave him overly trusting, a fact that is easy for others to take advantage of. Item Lost: Healing powers. | |||||
